Believe it or not, Pokemon cards can be worth a fortune. Some cards fetch high prices because of their rarity, condition, and demand, turning them into valuable investments or collectibles.

In a recent report by The Straits Times, a 23-year-old Malaysian nurse residing in Singapore found himself in hot water after he was caught stealing 2 boxes of Pokemon cards valued at SGD480 (RM1,459).

Sold to Settle Debts

Fong Jia Wei, influenced by TikTok videos showcasing the lucrative Pokemon card trade, resorted to theft. He pleaded guilty to two theft charges and was sentenced to a year of probation on May 14.

As part of his sentence, he must stay indoors from 11 pm to 6 am daily and complete 40 hours of community service.

Additionally, Fong’s parents had to post a SGD5,000 (RM15,000) bond to ensure his good behavior.

Outstanding College Fees

Fong completed his polytechnic studies in April 2021 but couldn’t obtain his diploma due to outstanding fees totaling around SGD7,000 (RM21,140).

“He managed to clear his fees and got his diploma in April 2022, using his savings and from the money he loaned from his friends,” stated Defence lawyers Josephus Tan and Cory Wong in court.

In an attempt to repay his friends, Fong turned to theft, hoping to use the proceeds from selling Pokemon cards. Unfortunately, he was apprehended with multiple packs of Pokemon cards acquired through fraudulent means, and the cards he sold were never recovered.

Fraud carries serious consequences, so it’s crucial to weigh the risks before making any decisions. What’s your take on this? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
