Malaysia has achieved the fourth spot as the best country in Asia for expatriates to live in, according to a recent survey by InterNations. Kuala Lumpur, among 49 cities, stood out by securing eighth place globally and third in Asia as the best city to live in.
In a unique trend on TikTok, Malaysians have discovered a lucrative income stream by embodying the roles of ‘non-playable characters’ (NPCs). Chamiy Malik and Faamiy Malik, famously known as Cha and Faa, are a pair of twins who have become notable NPC content creators on TikTok. They shared that their daily earnings from this endeavor range between RM3,000 and RM4,000. The twins, who have amassed around 200,000 followers on TikTok, engage in repeating movements and fulfilling viewers’ requests. Despite the seeming simplicity, they emphasize that their craft demands significant practice and effective time management.
According to Cha and Faa, their livestreams attract diverse audiences, including children, teenagers, and adults, with the highest viewership reaching around 18,000. They maintain a rigorous schedule of two livestreams a day—once in the evening and another at night. Beyond catering to a Malaysian audience, they’ve also captured the attention of viewers from South Korea. The duo’s content is not just a means of earning ‘coins’ (monetary gifts from viewers) on TikTok; they leverage their livestreams to promote an online business, enriching their income streams.
Cha and Faa attribute the inception of their NPC content creation to their mother’s suggestion, capitalizing on the trend’s popularity on TikTok. The siblings acknowledge that their online presence extends beyond just TikTok, as they manage an audience on other platforms as well. Creating content as NPCs not only serves as an income source for them but also contributes to the broader appeal of TikTok. The twins’ story sheds light on the multifaceted nature of online content creation, demonstrating how diverse avenues, such as virtual entrepreneurship, can complement the TikTok platform.
Another content creator, Nazri Yahya, who goes by the username @nazri.butterfly on TikTok, has embraced the NPC trend for the past four months. Despite occasional negative comments labeling NPC creators as “beggars,” Nazri appreciates the support he receives from his followers. He shares that he can attract an audience of around 1,000 to 6,000 viewers per live session, showcasing the widespread appeal of this unique form of entertainment. Nazri decided to pursue NPC content creation full-time after leaving his job in August, finding fulfillment and financial success through this unconventional and evolving avenue on TikTok.
