Michelle Yeoh honoured as pioneer by Biden with Presidential Medal of Freedom

Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, has been honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by US President Joe Biden for her historic achievement as the first Asian to win an Oscar for Best Actress in 2023. During the ceremony on Friday (May 3), Biden praised Yeoh for breaking stereotypes and barriers, enriching American culture through her diverse roles spanning martial arts, romantic comedies, and science fiction, which highlight our shared humanity. He applauded her for not only entertaining but also inspiring and touching hearts. This recognition places Yeoh among the distinguished recipients of America’s highest civilian award, which she received alongside 18 others.

In March 2023, Yeoh made history as the first Asian and Malaysian to win an Oscar for her performance in the film “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” The White House acknowledged her significant contributions to gender equality, conservation efforts, and global health, describing her as both a performer and pioneer who continues to inspire belief in possibilities on-screen and beyond.

According to Reuters, Yeoh was among the recipients recognized for their groundbreaking achievements. This list included Ellen Ochoa, the first Hispanic woman in space, and Jim Thorpe, the first Native American to win an Olympic gold medal in 1912. Other notable recipients included former US senator Elizabeth Dole, former vice-president Al Gore, one-time secretary of state John Kerry, and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Established in 1963 by then US President John F. Kennedy, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals, both civilian and military, regardless of nationality, who have made outstanding contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural endeavors, or other significant public or private endeavors.
