Study: Malaysians Ate 1.64 Million Servings of Instant Noodles Last Year, 13th Highest in the World!

Ever since Momofuku Ando invented instant noodles in Japan back in 1958, they have become a staple food worldwide, loved for their taste, convenience, and affordability.

Malaysians ate 1.64 million servings of instant noodles in 2023

You probably know that instant noodles are super popular in Malaysia, but just how popular are they? According to data from the World Instant Noodles Association (WINA), Malaysians consumed a whopping 1.64 million servings of instant noodles last year, ranking 13th highest in the world!

The data also showed that the annual consumption of instant noodles in Malaysia rose from 1.45 million in 2019 to 1.64 million in just five years. From 2019 to 2023, the number of instant noodles consumed increased each year, except for a slight dip in 2022.

Southeast Asian countries feature prominently in the top 20 rankings

Globally, China (including Hong Kong) had the highest consumption of instant noodles last year with an astounding 42.2 million servings. Indonesia, our Southeast Asian neighbor, took 2nd place with 14.54 million servings.

In fact, Southeast Asian countries feature prominently in the top 20 rankings, with Vietnam in 4th place (8.13 million servings), the Philippines in 7th (4.39 million servings), Thailand in 9th (3.95 million), Malaysia in 13th (1.64 million), and Myanmar in 18th (0.77 million servings).

WINA estimated that a staggering 120.21 million servings of instant noodles were consumed globally last year.
