When it comes to sightseeing, tourist attractions often have different entry fees for locals and foreigners. You’d think that’s the norm, right? Like, if you want to visit the stunning Emerald Pool in Krabi, Thailand, locals pay THB40 (around RM5.50), while foreigners dish out THB400 (around RM55). Fair enough, isn’t it?
Well, it seems some crafty Indonesians have cracked the code to dodge this tourist tax when exploring Malaysia. In a hilarious TikTok video by @hisyam.arif, these Indonesian travelers spill the beans on their “travel hack” to enjoy local prices in Malaysia. The video, now boasting over 1.6 million views, showcases their clever trick to blend in seamlessly.
In response to a TikTok post by allisya, where Indonesian women share their experiences studying or living in Malaysia, one of them cheekily revealed, “We’re Indonesians in Malaysia. If we want cheap tickets, we pretend to be Malay.” Switching to Bahasa Melayu, she smoothly adds, “Nak satu tiket, kak” (I want one ticket, sister). It turns out, speaking the language is their golden ticket to local prices. Talk about a tongue-in-cheek travel hack!
