Yesterday, the trial for the sexual harassment case involving renowned preacher, Ebit Lew, took place at the Tenom Magistrate’s Court in Sabah.
During the trial, the ninth prosecution witness, a woman in her 40s and the complainant in the case, testified that she received her first video call from Ebit Irawan Ibrahim Lew at 3:40 AM on March 4, 2021.
She mentioned that during the 291-second call (4 minutes and 51 seconds), she recognized Ebit’s voice from his social media presence, lectures, and live sessions he conducted.
“I remember he was asking about me and my family… he asked about my job, the problems I was facing, and why I was interested in his program. I shared about my family and my issues,” she said.
Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Zahida Zakaria, during the main examination, asked the witness to refer to documents from the telecommunications company Celcom, which contained customer information and call details to verify if calls were made from Ebit Lew’s phone number to the witness.
The witness stated that on the same date at around 2:28 AM, Ebit had sent her a WhatsApp message for the first time after she provided her phone number on Instagram on March 3, 2021.
From then until March 29, 2021, Ebit frequently sent WhatsApp messages and made phone calls to her, becoming increasingly bold with sexual content.
At 11:35 AM on March 22, 2021, Ebit reportedly informed the witness that he was in transit in Dubai and wanted to make a video call, but she declined the call.
“He made a video call, and I immediately turned it off. In the text message, he asked why I turned off the phone, saying ‘not fair’.
“I remember that was when he made a video call shirtless,” the witness said.
During yesterday’s proceedings, the prosecution also presented to the court the Digital Forensic Case Report by Cyber Security Malaysia, which contained message exchanges between the witness and Ebit Lew.
Ebit Lew, 38, is facing 11 charges, including outraging the modesty of a woman in her 40s by sending lewd words and images to her phone via WhatsApp between March and June.
The preacher is charged under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison or a fine or both, if found guilty.
