@patricklee_msia, a seasoned media freelancer, shared a touching TikTok story about Uncle Andrew, an 80-year-old who has turned the sidewalks near his Petaling Jaya home into a vibrant garden.

After retiring, Uncle Andrew took up gardening to keep himself busy. His love for plants soon extended beyond his yard to the nearby sidewalk, which had become cluttered with trash over the years.

“Lavandrew Avenue”

Uncle Andrew’s garden has become so lush and colorful that locals have nicknamed it “Lavandrew Avenue” due to the abundance of lavender flowers he has planted. Patrick Lee’s post captioned this charming transformation, highlighting Uncle Andrew’s dedication.

Cleaning Up the Neighborhood

Uncle Andrew recalls, “Twenty years ago, this sidewalk was just a dirty path filled with rubbish. I cleaned it up and started gardening there. I do everything by hand – trimming bushes, weeding, and sweeping.”

He pointed out that while many Malaysians tend to litter, they generally avoid doing so in beautifully maintained areas filled with flowers.

Humble Gardener

Despite the recognition, Uncle Andrew remains humble. He believes that people naturally enjoy green spaces and that nature can be calming, especially in bustling cities.

“It makes me happy to see people walking by my garden in the morning. Their compliments bring me joy,” he said.

Uncle Andrew doesn’t see himself as special; he’s just adding a touch of greenery and beauty to his neighborhood. His efforts have earned him praise and gratitude from many netizens, who appreciate his kind gesture.

Uncle Andrew’s sidewalk garden can be found along Jalan Sungai Jernih 8/1 in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. He jokes that because of all the lavender-colored flowers that he grows, people have taken to calling his garden “Lavandrew Avenue.” “If everyone can do their share when it comes to gardening around their own houses and vicinity, any place can be made into a green environment.” — Quote by Uncle Andrew, August 2024 Did you know that access to safe and inclusive green and public spaces are one of the criteria under the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)?
