Sabah Construction Worker Climbs 126-Metre Crane After Hearing ‘Whispers’
A construction worker in Luyang, Sabah, shocked onlookers when he climbed a towering 126-metre crane early in the morning on 7 April — later telling authorities he did it after hearing mysterious “whispers.”
The man, believed to be in his 40s, was seen perched on a beam of the crane at a building under construction. According to Harian Metro, he claimed to have done it unconsciously after waking up at dawn.
Emergency Call Sparked Early Morning Rescue
Authorities received an emergency call about the incident at 6:57 AM, prompting a team from the Penampang Fire and Rescue Station to rush to the scene. The site was located just 3 kilometres from the fire station.
“When they got there, the man was already at the end of the crane atop the building,” said Senior Assistant Fire Officer Zeno Tinggalan.
“The Whispers Made Me Do It”
The man, who was working at the construction site, told authorities that he didn’t realise what he was doing at the time. He claimed “whispers” had led him to climb the structure — although he could not explain exactly what he heard.
After a 30-minute dialogue with rescue personnel, the man agreed to climb down safely on his own. Firemen remained on-site to calm him down and ensure he was uninjured.
Man Handed Over to Police
Once safely on the ground, the man was handed over to the police for further investigation. No physical injuries were reported.
The incident, while shocking, has sparked conversations online about mental health, safety protocols at construction sites, and spiritual beliefs surrounding unexplained behaviour.
