FIFA Confirms 7 Malaysian Heritage Players Used Fake Birth Certificates

FIFA Finds Forged Documents in Malaysian Heritage Player Case

World football governing body FIFA has finally released the findings of their investigation into seven Malaysian heritage players, revealing that all seven submitted forged birth certificates.

According to the report, the documents submitted by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) were inconsistent with those held by FIFA’s secretariat. Further checks concluded that none of the players have genuine ancestral ties to Malaysia.

No Clear Intent, But Still a Serious Violation

FIFA stated that both FAM and the players involved cooperated throughout the investigation. Despite the absence of evidence proving intentional fraud, FIFA underscored that the issue remains serious due to the use of falsified documentation, breaching Article 22 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

FAM Defends Players’ Heritage Claims

FAM responded by explaining that it does not have the authority to issue birth certificates and relied on official records from Malaysian authorities.

They maintained that the seven players are indeed of Malaysian descent and that such claims had been confirmed by relevant national agencies.

FAM & Players Punished

As a result of the breach, FIFA imposed a fine of RM1.8 million on FAM. All seven players have been suspended from international football for 12 months and fined RM10,598 each.

FAM Has Limited Time to Appeal

According to Astro Arena journalist Fina Nasrom, FAM has three days to declare their intention to appeal the ruling. Should they proceed, a full appeal must be filed within the next five days.
