Highland Towers To Be Demolished After More Than Three Decades Tragic Collapse
Court Approval Clears Way For Demolition

One of Malaysia’s most recognisable abandoned landmarks is finally set to disappear from the skyline. The Ampang Magistrate’s Court recently approved an application by the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) to demolish the long-abandoned Highland Towers complex in Hulu Klang. The move comes after decades of uncertainty surrounding the site, which has remained vacant since the early 1990s. According to MPAJ Deputy President Hasrolnizam Shaari, discussions are now underway to coordinate the next phase of the project, including the appointment of parties responsible for carrying out the demolition works. Authorities expect the process to take place before the end of this year.
A Tragedy That Left A Lasting Mark On Malaysia
For many Malaysians, Highland Towers remains synonymous with one of the country’s darkest disasters. On 11 December 1993 at approximately 1:35pm, Block 1 of the condominium complex collapsed without warning after a slope failure behind the structure. The situation was worsened by prolonged heavy rainfall, resulting in a tragedy that claimed 48 lives. Following the collapse, residents of Blocks 2 and 3 were ordered to evacuate immediately due to safety concerns. Although those two blocks remained standing, they were never reoccupied and gradually became symbols of a disaster that shocked the nation.
End Of An Era For A Site Filled With History
Over the years, the abandoned towers became a haunting reminder of the tragedy, frequently attracting attention due to their deteriorating condition and the many stories associated with the site. The collapse also triggered lengthy legal disputes involving residents, developers and local authorities, with proceedings stretching on for years. More than three decades later, the planned demolition represents not only the removal of ageing structures but also the closing chapter of a painful episode in Malaysian history. For many residents and families affected by the tragedy, the demolition marks a significant step towards finally putting the past to rest.
