Harry Kok Takes Manglish To New York
Malaysian comedy puppet Harry Kok has taken a little piece of Malaysia to the streets of New York by teaching locals some of the country’s most recognisable Manglish phrases. In a video filmed on a pavement in Manhattan, Harry Kok was seen getting strangers to repeat expressions such as “relax lah”, “ya lah”, “don’t worry”, “diam lah bodoh”, “ekcelli”, “your fadder’s road”, “can laaa”, “damn bad siaa”, and “boss boss”. The interactions quickly turned into a fun cultural exchange as New Yorkers joined in and tried their best to pronounce the phrases.
A Puppet With A Very Malaysian Personality
Harry Kok Siew Yok is the creation of Malaysian media personality Ryan Matjeraie. The satirical puppet was designed to represent the everyday Malaysian through comedy, with the character’s name carrying its own joke. “Harry Kok” is a play on the Hokkien slang “talk kok”, which refers to talking nonsense, while “Siew Yok” refers to crispy roast pork in Cantonese. Put together, the name humorously translates into someone who talks rubbish, a personality that has become the puppet’s trademark.
New Yorkers Were Happy To Join In
As Harry Kok introduced New Yorkers to Manglish one phrase at a time, many of them happily repeated the expressions despite hearing them for the first time. The video highlighted how humour and language can easily connect people from different backgrounds, while giving Malaysian slang an unexpected moment in one of the world’s busiest cities.
