The tragic death of Zayn Rayyan, an autistic boy, last December has led to his parents being charged with child neglect, which could result in severe penalties.

Zaim Ikhwan Zahari and Ismanira Abdul Manaf, both 29, pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court today. They are facing charges under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which could mean a fine of up to RM50,000 or up to 20 years in jail, or both.

Zayn Rayyan’s grandparents were also detained by the police on June 12 and brought to court but have since been released on bail. They are being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Zayn was reported missing last December, and his body was found the next day, 200 meters from his apartment in Damansara Damai. The post-mortem revealed he died from strangulation and had injuries consistent with self-defense.

Stay tuned for more updates on this heartbreaking case.
