Elderly Couple Travels from KL to Perak for AI-Generated Tourist Spot That Doesn’t Exist
Elderly Couple Fooled by AI-Generated Video, Travels Hours for Fake Tourist Attraction
In an emotional and baffling incident, an elderly Malaysian couple travelled all the way from Kuala Lumpur to Perak after watching a video promoting a cable car attraction — only to discover upon arrival that the tourist spot doesn’t exist.
The video, as it turns out, was entirely AI-generated, including the digital ‘reporter’ who appeared to promote the site.
Hotel Receptionist Shocked by the Couple’s Story
The story was shared by a user named @dyaaaaaaa._ on Threads, who works at a hotel in Perak. She was on duty when the couple checked in and casually asked if she had been to the “Kuak Hulu cable car.”
Initially thinking it was a joke, she quickly realised the couple was serious. They had travelled from KL specifically to visit this attraction, having seen it featured in a viral video on Facebook.
Upon seeing the video, she was stunned — not only was the video entirely artificial, but the people in it, including the reporter, were not real.
“I explained to them the video is AI-generated. They said, ‘No way people would cheat others like that, especially with a reporter in it.’”
Heartbreaking Realisation: “What Do We Do Now?”
After finally understanding the truth, the couple felt defeated and embarrassed. The elderly man quietly asked his wife, “What do we do now?”
When asked why they didn’t consult their children before making the trip, they admitted feeling too ashamed to ask for help.
The elderly woman, still visibly shocked, even suggested suing the reporter, only to be told that the reporter wasn’t a real person — just a digital avatar.
“She said, ‘How could they create people like this?’” recalled the hotel staff.
A Cautionary Tale: Protect Our Elderly from AI Misinformation
The incident has triggered concern online, especially about how easily elderly citizens can be misled by realistic-looking AI content.
The hotel staffer urged netizens to check in with their parents and older family members more often and verify the content they’re watching, especially if they plan to travel.
This case shines a spotlight on how AI-generated tourism content, when shared unchecked, can exploit trust and cause real-life harm — even emotional distress.
