A wild elephant in Thailand made headlines after it wandered into a grocery store, helping itself to snacks in a surprisingly gentle manner.
A Calm Stroll for a Snack
The incident occurred on Monday, 2 June, near Khao Yai National Park in northeastern Thailand. The large male elephant, known locally as Plai Biang Lek, was seen on video carefully pausing outside the shop before maneuvering his way through the entrance.
Inside, the elephant headed straight to the shop’s counter, grabbing and munching on sweet treats without causing chaos. Park staff who arrived to shoo it away were unsuccessful as the elephant remained unfazed.
Leaving With Minimal Damage
Eventually, Plai Biang Lek backed out of the shop, carrying a bag of snacks in its trunk. The only traces of his visit were muddy footprints on the floor and a smudge on the ceiling, much to the amusement of onlookers.
Shop Owner Finds the Visit Amusing
Kamploy Kakaew, the shop owner, recounted the experience with a smile. She shared that the elephant had enjoyed about nine bags of sweet rice crackers, a sandwich, and some dried bananas she had bought that very morning.
Elephant Has a History of Sneaking In
Danai Sookkanthachat, a volunteer park worker who knows the elephant well, explained that Plai Biang Lek is known for visiting the area in search of food. While the elephant has previously entered homes, this was the first time Danai had seen it enter a grocery store.
After leaving the shop, the elephant reportedly opened a bedroom window of another nearby house, continuing its quest for snacks.
