Injured Penang Woman Returns RM100 to MCA Youth Leader, Says She Was Used for Political Publicity
A single mother from Penang, who suffered injuries after falling into a roadside gutter at a local hawker centre, has returned a RM100 donation from MCA Youth Deputy Chief Tan Yang Pang — alleging she was used as political content without her consent.
“She Didn’t Want to Be a Political Tool”
According to Oriental Daily, the woman, identified as Vijayesri, was visibly upset that her misfortune was being turned into a public relations opportunity.
She returned the donation through Berapit village chief Lin Qixian, during a hospital visit after her admission. Lin said Vijayesri had specifically requested that the funds be sent back to Tan and asked not to have her suffering used for political gain.
“She felt helpless and angry. Although she accepted the money in good faith, she later realized it was used for publicity,” said Lin.
After receiving the cash from Vijayesri, Lin transferred RM100 back to Tan via e-wallet, fulfilling her wish to distance herself from the political narrative.
Broken Promises and Publicity Videos
The incident dates back to when Tan Yang Pang had visited Vijayesri at her home before she was hospitalised. He had promised to bring medical personnel to examine her and allegedly recorded a video implying such efforts — while also criticising his political opponents.
However, Tan failed to follow through on the promise, leaving the woman disappointed.
In contrast, Berapit State Assemblyperson (ADUN) Heng Lee Lee reportedly visited the woman later and promptly arranged for her to receive proper medical attention at a hospital.
“She returned the money to protect her dignity and to take a clear stance,” Lin added.
