Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob recently reiterated his call to strengthen the national language through amendments to several laws, urging all Malaysians to support Bahasa Melayu.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Ismail revealed that during the officiating of the 3rd International Symposium on Bahasa Melayu Aspirations in Kuala Lumpur on September 23, he once again called for the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Act 1959 to be urgently amended to give more authority to Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP).
Ismail Sabri calls for DBP to be given more authority
For context, DBP is the government body responsible for coordinating the use of Bahasa Melayu in Malaysia. Currently, they lack the power to impose fines on property developers who use non-Bahasa Melayu names for their development projects.
During his speech at the Bahasa Melayu symposium, the former Prime Minister was quoted by Malay Mail as saying that developers in Malaysia are increasingly using French, Spanish, and English names for their projects instead of names related to Malaysia.
Ismail Sabri wants the private sector to adopt Bahasa Melayu
In addition, Ismail also urged the government to require the private sector to use Bahasa Melayu for all official purposes to help elevate the national language both locally and internationally.
