MAG group managing director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail noted that the recovery progress is currently at 97%, acknowledging the challenges faced since terminating the contract with Brahim’s Food Services (BFS) on August 31, 2023. In a ‘Airline Leader Interview – MAG’ session at the Centre for Aviation (Capa) Asia Aviation Summit and Sustainability Awards 2023, Izham emphasized the need for focus on the objective, highlighting that although catering is not the core business, customer experience remains paramount.
“We had to find ways to reset our products, and that entailed going through a very painful journey,”
As the parent company of Malaysia Airlines, MAG is committed to addressing the in-flight meal issue and exploring the launch of Asean menus to showcase the region’s diverse cuisines to passengers worldwide.
“Our aspiration is to be a premium Asia-friendly airline. Hence, we have to depict the beauties of Asean and Asia with various menus,”
Currently, MAB has eight caterers supplying in-flight meals. The long-standing catering contract with BFS concluded on August 31, 2023, following unsuccessful negotiations between the two parties since the fourth quarter of 2022. Izham highlighted the recent acquisition of 24 hi-lift trucks, crucial for maintaining food quality and safety standards. He assured that by November 15, in-flight meal services will be fully restored.
“We have 24 hi-lift trucks that just arrived a couple of weeks ago, and we are good to go. Therefore, on Nov 15, you will see us back to normal,”
he affirmed.
