Malaysian Caught in Thailand Smuggling M4 Rifles for RM10K Deal
Malaysian Man Arrested in Thailand with M4 Rifles After RM10K Smuggling Deal
A 45-year-old Malaysian man was arrested over the weekend in Thailand’s Songkhla province for attempting to smuggle military-grade firearms and ammunition across the border. Authorities believe the operation is tied to a larger cross-border arms trafficking syndicate.
Caught with M4 Rifles at Thai Checkpoint
The suspect, known only as Yeb, was stopped by Thai police at a security checkpoint on Kanchanawanit Road in Sadao District. Officers grew suspicious after noticing erratic behavior from a white Kia sedan with Malaysian license plates.
Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered two American-made M4 assault rifles hidden under a rubber floor mat behind the driver’s seat. The search also uncovered 300 rounds of 5.56 calibre ammunition along with an additional 100 rounds of various types.
Yeb admitted he was paid RM10,000 (approximately 76,000 Thai baht) by a contact based in Penang, Malaysia, to deliver the weapons across the border.
Police: Weapons Not Meant for Southern Thailand Insurgency
Sadao Police Station’s Colonel Surachit Petchjom confirmed the arrest and stressed that the smuggling was not tied to Thailand’s southern insurgency.
“This case does not appear to be linked to the conflict in the southern border provinces,” he said. “Instead, it reflects a pattern of illegal arms movement through a transnational criminal network.”
Authorities believe the weapons were intended for use in other conflict zones, though they have not specified the exact destination.
Wider Network Suspected, Border Security Tightened
Thai police believe Yeb’s arrest could lead to the exposure of more individuals involved in the arms trafficking operation. Officers have now heightened surveillance and security checks across southern Thailand, a region often exploited as a smuggling corridor for drugs, weapons, and contraband.
Yeb remains in custody, facing serious charges related to illegal firearm possession and arms trafficking.
Malaysia Confirms Investigation Ties
Back in Malaysia, authorities are also taking the case seriously. Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim, Director of Bukit Aman’s Internal Security and Public Order Department, confirmed that Malaysian police are working with their Thai counterparts.
“We believe the weapons were purchased for related criminal activities,” he said, without providing further details.
Social media has been abuzz with speculation, including claims about Yeb’s full name and age, though officials have yet to release his identity publicly.
