It’s common for foreigners who come to Malaysia and create content to quickly gain popularity among locals. But did you know that mastering a foreign language can make a Malaysian famous with people from other countries?

A Korean tourist named Tangyeong recently shared a TikTok video featuring a fruit vendor at a night market in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, who speaks fluent Korean. She even nicknamed him ‘Mango Boy.’

In her video, Tangyeong mentioned, “I was welcomed by Kota Kinabalu’s Mango Boy.” The vendor is seen impressing her by praising food items in Korean, saying, “Hello, the mangoes are so good. Wrapped braised pig’s feet are so good,” before launching into lyrics from a popular Korean Tanghulu song.

Turns out, this vendor isn’t just any regular fruit seller—he’s a sensation among Korean tourists! Thanks to his impressive language skills, he’s earned the nickname ‘Mango Boy’ among the Korean community.

In fact, a popular Korean travel page, Travelholic Korea, has featured Mango Boy in their content, highlighting him as “a young man in Kota Kinabalu who speaks Korean very well.”

Mango Boy even has his own hashtag on TikTok in Korean, #망고보이. Many have pointed out that due to the high number of Korean tourists in Kota Kinabalu, it’s not unusual to find local vendors who can speak Korean—but Mango Boy has clearly taken it to the next level!
