Massive Fire Destroys 1,000 Homes in Sandakan

Fire Wipes Out Almost Entire Village

A devastating fire swept through Kampung Bahagia, a floating village in Sandakan, Sabah, destroying around 1,000 out of approximately 1,200 homes. The incident happened early Sunday and quickly escalated into a large-scale disaster, leaving more than 9,000 residents without shelter. The scale of destruction was severe, with the majority of the village reduced to ashes within hours.

Firefighters Faced Major Challenges

Authorities responded after receiving an emergency call at 1.32am, deploying dozens of firefighters to contain the blaze. According to Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station chief Jimmy Lagung, the fire spread across more than four hectares, while low-tide conditions made it difficult to access enough water for firefighting efforts. The situation was officially declared a disaster area at 4am, highlighting the seriousness of the incident and the challenges faced on the ground.

Thousands Displaced, Aid Efforts Begin

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed shock upon learning about the incident, confirming that both federal and Sabah state governments are coordinating assistance and temporary shelter for the victims. Although no casualties were reported, authorities confirmed that the affected homes are no longer safe for residents to return to. Relief operations are ongoing as thousands of displaced individuals await further support and recovery efforts.
