NEW FISH SPECIES NAMED AFTER GOKU’S SUPER SAIYAN TRANSFORMATION

Inspired By an Iconic Dragon Ball Z Moment

A newly discovered species of goby fish has been officially named Vanderhorstia supersaiyan, a direct nod to Goku’s legendary transformation into a Super Saiyan in Dragon Ball Z. The moment Goku powered up against Frieza remains one of the most iconic scenes in anime history, and now it has inspired the naming of a real-life marine species.

Bright Yellow Fins Reminiscent of Super Saiyan Aura

Researchers shared that the fish’s vivid yellow fin stripes immediately reminded them of Goku’s glowing golden aura during his transformation. The similarity was so striking that it naturally led to the unique scientific name, considered one of the most memorable ever recorded in marine taxonomy.

Discovered Near Okinawa in the Twilight Zone

The species was described in the scientific journal Ichthyological Research after a single specimen was collected near Ishigaki-jima Island in Okinawa. The fish was found at a depth of about 210 meters in an area known as the “Twilight Zone”, one of the least explored regions of Japanese waters.

Small Size, Bold Colours

Measuring only 77 millimetres in length, the fish stands out due to its vibrant coloration and distinctive markings. It features bright yellow streaks on the second dorsal fin, anal fin, and caudal fin, along with faint yellow patches on its head. A neat row of diamond-shaped spots lines its body, forming a pattern not found in any other species of the Vanderhorstia genus.

A Rare Deep Sea Species With Unusual Colouration

Despite living in low-light deep sea environments, the goby displays colours far bolder than those of related species in shallow waters. This unusual combination of depth, body structure, and unmistakable yellow markings convinced scientists that the Super Saiyan name was the perfect fit.

Researchers Credit Dragon Ball as Direct Inspiration

The research team openly acknowledged Dragon Ball as the direct inspiration for the species name, highlighting the immediate visual connection between the fish’s fin pattern and Goku’s transformation. Although it is rare for pop culture references to appear in formal taxonomy, anime fans worldwide have embraced the name with enthusiasm.
