UiTM Dengkil Sparks Outrage After Students Seen Wearing KKK Costumes for Law Assignment
UiTM Dengkil Criticised for Allowing Students to Wear KKK Outfits in Law Assignment
A viral TikTok video showing a group of UiTM Dengkil students donning Ku Klux Klan (KKK) robes has sparked outrage on social media, drawing condemnation for glorifying a white supremacist hate group in the name of academic presentation.
The footage, believed to be part of a class project for a law module called “Contemporary Global and Legal Issues,” showed students wearing white robes and pointed hoods similar to those historically worn by members of the KKK. Some even carried crosses, further fuelling backlash online.
The KKK, originally formed in 1865 in the United States, is known for its history of racism, violence, and oppression against Black Americans and other minorities.
Critics Call It Tone-Deaf and Offensive
Social media users slammed the act as tone-deaf and inappropriate. Instagram user @miufantome criticised the execution of the assignment, saying that while the module encourages awareness of global issues, dressing as white supremacists goes far beyond the line of academic expression.
She shared photos of the students posing in a wooded area, likening it to historical images of KKK members. The backlash was so intense that the students’ Instagram accounts were quickly set to private.
Whistleblowers and Threats Follow
A Twitter user @yapxiang posted screenshots from a UiTM student who claimed the lecturer only approved the topic — not the execution involving costumes. The student expressed concern that the lecturer could be unfairly blamed.
Meanwhile, @miufantome claimed she received threatening messages from individuals believed to be involved in the assignment, pressuring her to remove her Instagram Stories.
UiTM Responds, Defends Students’ Intentions
UiTM issued a formal statement defending the students, explaining that the KKK costumes were intended to enhance the educational experience and promote critical thinking.
According to the university, the outfits were part of a controlled classroom assignment designed to explore human rights issues globally. They insisted that no racial, cultural, or religious sensitivities were intended to be violated.
“We urge the public to evaluate this matter from an academic point of view, taking the full context into consideration,” the university said in the statement.
