A video showing a dramatic water surge at the popular Lata Iskandar waterfall along Jalan Tapah in Perak, en route to Cameron Highlands, has gone viral on social media.
In the 45-second video captured by TikTok user @amsyar.am, the usually calm waterfall is seen overflowing with muddy water, rushing into the stream below.
According to Sinar Daily, a water surge is a phenomenon caused by heavy rain, where large quantities of water suddenly flow downstream.
Many social media users have been warning others to avoid the area during heavy rainfall.
The video was taken on Monday, 13 May.
The Perak Fire and Rescue Department said they are monitoring the situation.
The department’s operations division assistant director, Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad, said the heavy rain on Sunday night caused the heavy water flow around 9am on Monday morning, as reported by the New Straits Times.
He confirmed that no victims were involved in the incident.
He added that Sungai Lata Iskandar is one of seven rivers in Perak known to be at risk of water surges during periods of unusually high rainfall.
According to a previous article by The Star, the seven water surge hotspots in Perak are:
- Sungai Bil Behrang
- Sungai Dang
- Sungai Kg Ruah Bt 7
- Sungai Lata Kijang
- Sungai Lata Iskandar
- Sungai Ulu Slim
