Malaysians were left scratching their heads at Georgia P’s unusual recipe that combines petai with avocados.

Georgia’s journey with petai started back in 2022, as seen on her TikTok “petai playlist”.

The most talked-about video in the playlist is her recent attempt to incorporate the very Malaysian ingredient, petai, into a sandwich.

It’s not your typical fare, even for die-hard petai enthusiasts.

But for Georgia, who shares “unique recipes using South East Asian ingredients” on TikTok at @simplegreensoul, the sandwich was a hit.

Merging petai into a smashed avocado sandwich, her video has racked up over a million views.

One Malaysian summed it up well: “Petai sandwich? Having a very Malay heart attack.”

Another joked that their grandmother must be rolling in her grave.

And then came the suggestion of a “petai smoothie”. Georgia’s response? “OMG hahaha great idea.”

There were concerns about the strong smell and even comments about feeling emotional watching the petai preparation.

For the sandwich, Georgia chopped the petai beans, checked for worms, and blanched them.

She smashed avocados, mixed in the beans, lime juice, and chili, and spread the mixture between slices of bread.

The texture resembled face mask goo, but Georgia loved her petai and avocado creation.

“It’s bursting with flavor,” she exclaimed.

In 2022, Georgia’s first petai video mentioned Malaysia and summed up petai as “so good yet so bad”.

She made sambal with petai and rice.

Her petai sandwich video hit a million views, while her sambal video got just over 100K.

In June this year, she added petai to a pumpkin, ginger, and lemongrass soup, which got around 30K views.

Georgia’s petai avocado creation woke Malaysians up and drew them in.

However, this fusion is not as shocking as the South Korean influencer who made “cendol ramen”.
