X Faces Mass User Exodus, Expected to Lose Over 7 Million Users by 2025

Elon Musk’s rebranded platform, X (formerly Twitter), is facing an alarming loss of users, with analysts predicting that it will lose over 7 million users by 2025. While there was a brief spike in activity during the US presidential election, the overall trend shows a concerning decline in engagement on the platform.
X has always relied on major events like elections to boost user activity. In previous years, elections sparked surges in daily active users, and this year, it seemed like X might experience the same. However, recent data paints a different picture: users are fleeing the platform due to growing concerns over misinformation and toxic content.
According to reports from The Guardian, citing SimilarWeb data, X saw a loss of 300,000 to 2.6 million daily users in the US alone during October, dropping from 32.3 million to 29.6 million — an 8.4% decrease.
The situation looks bleak for the platform, with analysts predicting this decline will continue into 2025. eMarketer estimates that X will lose 7 million monthly active users in the US alone since Musk’s takeover in 2022.
This user loss is paralleled by a significant devaluation of the platform’s brand, which is now worth just $673 million (RM2.99 billion), down from $5.7 billion (RM25.3 billion) before the acquisition. Revenue has also been hit hard, dropping by 40% year-over-year by mid-2024.
Meanwhile, competitors like Meta’s Threads and Bluesky are taking advantage of the user exodus. Threads, with over 100 million daily active users and 300 million monthly users, continues to evolve, offering new features such as curated feeds and advanced search tools. Bluesky, though smaller with 25 million users, has emerged as a popular refuge for users seeking a more welcoming and less toxic environment.Musk’s ambitious vision for X as an “everything app” now faces an existential challenge. Unless major changes are made quickly, X risks fading into obscurity, serving as another cautionary tale in the ever-evolving tech world.
