YouTuber Exposes Tofu Factory Using Plastic Waste As Cooking Fuel

A shocking revelation by YouTuber Andrew Fraser has gone viral after he uploaded a video showing how a tofu factory in Surabaya, Indonesia uses plastic waste as fuel to fry tofu.

In the video, Fraser documents how heaps of garbage—including non-degradable plastic, scrap fabrics, and other waste—are burned directly beneath massive woks to cook tofu. Even more concerning, no filtration system or safety measures appear to be in place to prevent toxic fumes from contaminating the food.

“What’s baffling is how no one seems alarmed by the amount of plastic going into the food,” Fraser says in the video.

According to Fraser, after the tofu is cooked, it’s scooped out using a broken fan cover that has been repurposed as a strainer.

It Tastes Good, But It’s Potentially Toxic

Despite the tofu’s appealing taste, Fraser warns that the cooking method poses serious health risks.

“It tastes great, but when you cook tofu directly over burning plastic, without any kind of filtering process, contamination is almost guaranteed,” he said.

Fraser, who claims to have visited around 30 tofu factories, says that while some still use firewood, the majority have switched to plastic waste due to its low cost and high heat.

“The air becomes saturated with fumes, and that pollution ends up in the food. It’s a dangerous cycle—cheap for them, toxic for us.”

The video has sparked outrage on social media and raised concerns about food safety practices in small-scale factories, particularly in Southeast Asia.
