Agong: Malaysians Have Every Right to Be Disappointed by Abuse of Power

His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, has stated that Malaysians have every right to feel disappointed and frustrated when those entrusted with authority abuse their power or are involved in corruption.

The King made the remarks after being briefed on Thursday (9 January) by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Azalina Othman Said, on matters involving domestic legislation, governance, and ongoing institutional reforms.

Abuse of power erodes public trust

According to a statement shared on Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar’s official Facebook page, His Majesty stressed that the Federal Constitution and the rule of law must always be protected and upheld without exception.

He emphasised that these principles are not merely ceremonial, but form the backbone of public confidence in how the country is governed and administered.

“The people have the right to feel disappointed when authorities are found to abuse their positions or engage in corruption,” His Majesty said.

Rukun Negara must be upheld

The King further highlighted that safeguarding the Constitution and the rule of law, two core pillars of the Rukun Negara, is essential because both directly influence how the rakyat perceive the integrity of public institutions.

When these principles are undermined, trust in governance weakens, creating frustration and disillusionment among the public.

Reform efforts discussed

During the meeting, discussions also touched on efforts to strengthen governance and accelerate institutional reforms aimed at improving accountability and combating corruption.

The King’s remarks come amid heightened public scrutiny over leadership integrity, transparency, and accountability, reflecting growing expectations among Malaysians for cleaner governance and meaningful reform.
