Neymar Ends His International Career

Brazilian superstar Neymar has officially announced his retirement from international football following Brazil’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Brazil’s hopes of winning a sixth world title came to an end after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16, with Erling Haaland scoring twice to send the Scandinavian nation into the quarter-finals for the first time in its history.

Final Goal In Brazil Colours

Neymar came off the bench and scored from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time, giving Brazil a late consolation goal that ultimately became the final goal of his international career.

The strike also saw Neymar become only the second Brazilian player to score in four different FIFA World Cups (2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026), matching the remarkable achievement of Brazilian legend Pelé.

The 34-year-old ends his international journey as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 80 goals in 130 appearances. Only Cafu has earned more caps for the Seleção, with 142 appearances.

“I Gave Everything”

Speaking after the match, Neymar admitted that it was time to close one of the most memorable chapters of his career.

“I’ve tried, I’ve given everything. Now it’s over.”

“I started here, and I’m ending it here.”

Neymar endured an injury-hit build-up to the tournament and featured only twice as a substitute during the World Cup, including Brazil’s final group-stage match against Scotland.

Brazil also missed crucial opportunities during the defeat, including Bruno Guimarães’ first-half penalty that was saved by Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, while youngster Endrick failed to convert a one-on-one opportunity after coming off the bench.

The defeat marked Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990, ending an era with one of the country’s greatest footballers officially bidding farewell to international football.
