Henry Golding Takes Antoni From ‘Queer Eye’ to Sarawak to Explore Iban Culture & Food

Malaysia is once again in the spotlight, thanks to Hollywood star Henry Golding! The Malaysia-born British actor brings global attention to Sarawak in No Taste Like Home With Antoni Porowski, a new six-part docuseries now streaming on Disney+.
The show, hosted by Queer Eye’s food and wine expert Antoni Porowski, takes celebrities on a journey to explore their ancestral culinary traditions. For Golding, that meant heading back to Borneo to rediscover his Iban roots, making Malaysians beam with pride.
Golding Embraces His Iban Heritage
Best known for Crazy Rich Asians (2018), Henry Golding was born in Sarawak and has always embraced his Iban heritage. His mother is from the indigenous Iban tribe, and though he moved to England at the age of eight, his connection to his roots never faded.
In fact, he even has traditional Iban tattoos as a tribute to his ancestry!
Although Golding is no stranger to his heritage, the journey still managed to reveal new surprises. In a Zoom interview with The Straits Times, Porowski shared that despite Golding’s deep knowledge of his family history, he learned some unexpected facts—including a direct connection to actual headhunters in his lineage. Oh, and even a witch! Talk about an unexpected family discovery.
A Culinary Adventure in Sarawak
Of course, no cultural deep dive is complete without food, and the duo indulged in plenty of it!
One of Golding’s favourite moments was eating freshly caught fish by the river, cooked with torch ginger. Porowski recalled how the actor’s face lit up as he dug into the meal with his hands—like a true kampung boy!
But Golding didn’t just stop at familiar flavours. He went all in, even eating live sago grubs—a local delicacy. While many would hesitate (or run the other way), he embraced it with enthusiasm. Porowski, on the other hand, politely declined.
His daring food moment? Trying durian for the first time! He described it as “overly ripe camembert blended with very sharp garlic.” Love it or hate it, you know you’re in Malaysia when durian is involved.
A Deepened Connection to His Roots
Beyond the food and fun, the experience had a profound impact on Golding. Porowski observed how meeting long-lost family members and hearing their stories deepened the actor’s connection to his heritage.
Despite his Hollywood success, Golding remains a proud Sarawakian at heart.
