No More Buying Gardenia At KLIA, Brand To Open First-Ever Factory In Sarawak
Gardenia Is Finally Coming To Sarawak
Sarawakians will soon be able to enjoy freshly baked Gardenia bread without having to bring loaves back from Peninsular Malaysia. According to The Borneo Post, Kim Teck Cheong (KTC) Consolidated Berhad and Sanjung Etika Sdn Bhd signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 13 July to establish Gardenia Bakeries (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd. The RM30 million facility will be built at the Samarahan Industrial Park and is expected to begin production in 2027, with up to 500 jobs to be created as operations expand.
Fresh Bread Made Locally
Following the signing ceremony, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian welcomed the investment, saying Sarawakians would finally be able to enjoy fresh Gardenia bread without buying it at KLIA before flying home. KTC executive director Datuk Dexter Lau described the project as a major milestone, as it will be the first time Gardenia bread is manufactured in Sarawak instead of being transported from Peninsular Malaysia. The factory is expected to produce around 6,000 loaves of bread daily during its initial phase, with only about half released for sale while operations are fine-tuned. Once production is fully stabilised, daily output is expected to increase to between 10,000 and 20,000 loaves.
Special Sarawak Edition Also Planned
The new facility will utilise the latest baking technology while prioritising locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. Instead of opening standalone Gardenia outlets, the bread will be distributed through existing supermarkets and retailers across Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, Miri and other parts of the state. Lau also said locally produced Gardenia bread will be priced similarly to products sold in Sabah, making it more affordable than imported supplies currently available in Sarawak. The company is also planning to introduce a special Gardenia Sarawak Edition featuring packaging inspired by the Sarawak flag, along with exclusive products created specifically for the state.
