A recent TikTok video featuring AI technology altering the iconic Lord Murugan statue at Batu Caves has sparked widespread outrage, especially among Malaysia’s Hindu community. The video, produced by a foreign tourist identified as ‘Koshish Lama’ on TikTok, uses artificial intelligence to make the statue appear as though it is moving, which many have deemed offensive and disrespectful.
The Dewan Himpunan Pendukung Pas (DHPP) has strongly condemned the video, labeling it as a “barbaric act” that disrespects Malaysia’s cultural and religious values. In a statement shared on their Facebook page, DHPP Chief N. Balasubramaniam emphasized the detrimental impact of such actions on Malaysia’s harmony and unity.
“As Malaysians, we take pride in our cultural and religious diversity, which forms the backbone of our national harmony. Actions that degrade this diversity not only disturb inter-racial harmony but also violate the core principles of our unity,” said Balasubramaniam.
The Viral Video and Public Reaction
The controversial TikTok video quickly gained attention, drawing criticism from various quarters. Many from the Hindu community expressed their frustration, describing the tourist’s actions as insensitive and an outright disregard for local cultural and religious practices.
“This act is not only rude but also an abuse of technology that disregards the sanctity of our religious sites,” a concerned netizen commented.
Call for Accountability
Balasubramaniam urged locals and foreigners alike to better understand and respect Malaysian customs, particularly when dealing with sensitive issues like religion. He called for stricter regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.
“While we celebrate diversity, this does not mean we tolerate acts of insensitivity that threaten our harmony. Firm action must be taken to preserve the unity that defines us as a nation,” he added.
Moving Forward
DHPP also highlighted the importance of education and awareness in preventing similar controversies. They stressed the need for Malaysians to work together to uphold the values of respect and understanding, ensuring that cultural and religious sensitivities are protected.
With unity as a cornerstone of Malaysia’s identity, it remains crucial to address such incidents firmly to maintain the nation’s harmony.
