Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim just made history as Malaysia’s first prime minister to meet Vladimir Putin since the Russia-Ukraine war kicked off.
In a high-profile meeting on September 4, Anwar was invited by Russian President Vladimir Putin to join the upcoming BRICS summit. This invitation could be a game-changer for Malaysia, hinting at a possible spot in the BRICS group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE.
Anwar’s rendezvous with Putin was part of his two-day trip to attend the 9th Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Russia. This is Anwar’s first visit to Russia since taking office in November 2022, and it’s the first time a Malaysian prime minister has met Putin since the war began.
“The invitation came straight from President Putin during a detailed and extended meeting that included dinner. It shows just how much Russia values Malaysia,” Anwar shared on Facebook.
He’s accepted the invite to the BRICS summit, set to take place in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24.
During their lengthy discussion, Anwar and Putin talked about enhancing Malaysia-Russia relations, touching on areas like Islamic finance, agriculture, and education.
“The possibilities for Malaysia and Russia to collaborate and benefit each other are huge,” Anwar noted.
Anwar also didn’t shy away from addressing the Ukraine conflict, hoping for a peaceful and long-lasting solution. They both agreed on the need for global efforts to stop Israel’s actions in Gaza, calling for stronger international intervention.
