Apple’s “Find My” Helps Nab Burglars But Claims Policeman’s Life

Daylight Burglary in Alor Setar Captured on CCTV

A brazen home burglary in Alor Setar, Kedah, ended in tragedy when police used Apple’s “Find My” feature to track stolen devices, only to lose a dedicated officer during the arrest operation.

The incident happened at around 10:17 AM on Thursday, 7 August, targeting a double-storey semi-detached house. CCTV footage showed a blue Lexus circling the property before stopping outside.

One suspect approached the house, rang the doorbell, and, after receiving no response, pretended to make a phone call before returning to the car. After waiting about 10 minutes, the driver used tools to force open the electronic gate, and both men entered through a side aluminium door. They spent around 10 minutes inside before moving on to the neighbour’s home.

What the Burglars Took

The thieves left with:

  • 2 iPads

  • Watches

  • Handbags

  • Cash

The homeowner was at work, while his wife had just dropped off their children. The neighbours were also targeted since they were away at the time.

Apple’s “Find My” Leads Police to Suspects

Police quickly traced the suspects’ location using Apple’s “Find My” tracking feature on the stolen iPads. The technology allowed officers to pinpoint their whereabouts, leading to a swift arrest operation.

However, during the operation, tragedy struck.

Officer Killed in the Line of Duty

Corporal Mohd Hafizul Izham Mazlan, 35, from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Kedah Police Contingent Headquarters, was killed when the suspects’ vehicle rammed into him.

“My police friend didn’t make it. May God take him to heaven,” wrote one person close to the victim on social media.

Suspects’ Criminal Backgrounds Revealed

Four male suspects, aged between 24 and 26, were arrested and remanded for seven days starting 8 August until 14 August. Magistrate Siti Nor Hasliza Md Ali issued the remand order at the Alor Setar Court Complex under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Background checks revealed that one suspect had 77 previous criminal records, mostly involving house break-ins and vehicle theft.

A Price Too High for Justice

While modern technology played a key role in solving the case, the operation came at the devastating cost of a life. The incident sparked conversations about the dangers faced by police officers in the line of duty and the risks involved in arrest operations.
