An Indonesian traveler’s first visit to Malaysia didn’t sit well with many online.
In a viral video, a man named Yusuf Hendranto was seen making fun of the Malay language upon arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang, Selangor.
“I just arrived at the airport, and some of the phrases made me laugh so much. Like when they said ‘baggage claim.’ You demand it, huh?”
In the video, he mentioned it was his first time in Malaysia, which made him feel strange hearing Malay words.
He admitted it was his first visit to Malaysia and feeling awkward while learning Malay.
“First time in Malaysia, first time reading Malay words, kinda strange but fun. I’m laughing to myself here.”
His behavior received criticism, even from people in Sumatra, who felt embarrassed by his actions in another country.
He faced a lot of backlash online, with many netizens urging him to show respect when in another country, not just in Malaysia but everywhere.
As a result, he publicly apologized, explaining that he didn’t intend to belittle any country.
Let’s hope he learns to understand the sensitivity of different cultures in the future. Not everyone thinks the same way we do.
