‘Echo’ Review: A Marvelous New Chapter in the MCU

Let’s dive into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) latest gem – Echo. The great news is you don’t need a PhD in MCU history to enjoy it fully.
Sure, it connects the dots from the 2021 Hawkeye Disney+ series and even tips its hat to the Daredevil series on Netflix, but don’t worry if you missed those; Echo stands strong on its own. All five episodes are now lighting up Disney+ Hotstar.
Brought to life by comic creator David Mack, Echo, in the comics, is a deaf superhero intricately linked to Daredevil. She possesses the unique ability to ‘echo’ any power she witnesses.
In the MCU, we meet Maya Lopez, played brilliantly by Alaqua Cox. Introduced in Hawkeye as a tough enforcer for Wilson Fisk, a.k.a The Kingpin, she doesn’t sport any superpowers (at least not yet) and happens to be deaf and one-legged.
The first 20 minutes of Echo’s initial episode serve as a handy refresher, bringing us up to speed on the events leading to this series and delving into Maya’s own backstory.
Now, the current storyline picks up from where Hawkeye left off – Maya Lopez escapes New York City after a face-off with Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). Seeking refuge in her hometown of Tamaha, Oklahoma, she hatches a plan, calling in favors and navigating old acquaintances while evading encounters with family and friends.
Maya’s mission involves taking down Fisk’s empire solo, but the surprise twist – Kingpin is very much alive, catching up with her in no time. On top of that, she uncovers hidden superpowers rooted in her Native American Choctaw heritage, giving her an edge against Fisk and his henchmen.
Echo proves to be a thrilling ride, combining gripping storytelling with the introduction of a character destined for greatness in the Marvel universe. Don’t miss this exciting new chapter that promises to echo for a long time in the MCU.
