Baby Girl Found Abandoned in a Box With Towel, Lime & Handwritten Note in Sabah

A heartbreaking discovery shook the quiet village of Kampung Brunei near Membakut, Sabah early Monday morning (22 April) when a baby girl was found abandoned in a cardboard box outside a house.

The infant, estimated to be just days old, was discovered shortly after 6am by a local man who was about to leave for work. Upon opening the box, he found a towel, a lime, and a handwritten note.

The note read:

“My child is in this box. Please take care of my baby. May your sustenance be blessed.”

According to Beaufort district police chief Superintendent Wong Leong Meng, police were alerted at 5.40am after the witness saw a person on a white motorcycle acting suspiciously outside the home.

The rider left moments before the box was discovered, and though the full registration number was not captured, it reportedly began with the letter “V”.

“At first, nothing seemed unusual,” Wong said. “But after opening the box, the witness realised there was a baby inside.”

The baby was immediately taken to Beaufort Hospital for examination and is reported to be in stable condition. Police have requested a blood sample for potential paternity testing as part of their ongoing investigation.

Authorities are now working to trace the mother’s whereabouts. The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code — a law that addresses child abandonment involving children under the age of 12.

While the baby is now in safe hands, the mysterious circumstances surrounding her abandonment reflect the silent crises faced by many, and the lengths some parents go to when they feel there are no options left.
