Google Plans to Delete Inactive Gmail Accounts: Tips to Secure Your Account
Source : EuroNews
Google is set to delete inactive Gmail accounts and associated services starting from December 1, as announced on their support page. The deletion will include Gmail inboxes, Photos, Calendar events, Contacts, YouTube videos, and Drive content linked to inactive accounts. Google defines an inactive account as one that hasn’t been used for a period of two years.
The reason behind Google’s decision is the vulnerability of inactive accounts to compromise. Typically, these accounts are older and may use outdated or reused passwords that could be compromised. Older accounts might not have activated two-factor authentication (2FA), a highly secure method that requires a separate device accessible only to the account owner.
To ensure your Google account remains active, engage in any of the following activities while signed in:
Reading/sending emails
Using Google Drive
Watching YouTube videos
Sharing photos
Downloading apps
Using Google Search
Utilizing “Sign in with Google” for third-party apps or services
Perform these actions on any logged-in device. If you have multiple accounts, log in to each one. Google will initiate the deletion of inactive accounts starting December 1.
It’s advisable to log in to any old and unused accounts now. Google will send reminder emails to both the primary and recovery email addresses at least eight months before an account is deleted, providing users with ample notice.
