House Hunter Claims RM5,000 Lost in Alleged Airbnb Rental Scam

A Malaysian house hunter allegedly lost RM5,000 after falling victim to a rental scam involving an Airbnb unit disguised as a long-term rental.

The incident was shared on Facebook, where the victim claimed to have found a property listing on a reputable website. After meeting with an individual who posed as a real estate agent, the victim received official-looking documents, two sets of keys, and access cards before transferring RM5,000 to what appeared to be a valid bank account.

Later, the victim discovered that the unit was an Airbnb property, temporarily rented by the alleged scammer.

The case gained attention as others shared similar experiences on social media. One user, @Schael_ on Threads, described a near-miss encounter: “The place looked like a hotel — fresh sheets, towels, AC running, Wi-Fi.”

Common red flags in these cases include:

  • Official-looking paperwork
  • Listings on legitimate property websites
  • Fully furnished units with unusually low rental prices
  • Pressure tactics urging quick deposits

Experts advise potential renters to always verify agent credentials, be skeptical of deals that seem too good to be true, and avoid rushing into transactions.

While these reports remain allegations, they serve as an important reminder to exercise thorough due diligence when renting property in Malaysia.
