Surge of Chinese Tourists to Malaysia: 130% Increase in 2024

Malaysia is witnessing an extraordinary boom in Chinese tourist arrivals, with a staggering 3.7 million visitors from China recorded throughout 2024—an impressive 130% increase compared to the previous year. According to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC), this surge is largely driven by the visa-free policy introduced on December 1, 2023, and extended until December 2026.
Visa-Free Policy Attracts Chinese Tourists
With this visa-free entry, Chinese tourists can travel to Malaysia without a visa and stay for up to 30 days. This move has made Malaysia a more attractive and accessible destination for Chinese travelers, who have long been a major force in the global tourism industry.
More Direct Flights, Easier Travel
Aside from visa leniency, enhanced air connectivity has also played a crucial role in boosting Chinese tourist numbers. China Eastern Airlines recently launched a direct flight from Xi’an to Kuala Lumpur via Kunming in December 2024, creating more opportunities for Chinese visitors to explore Malaysia. With improved flight options, traveling from major cities across China to Malaysia has become more convenient than ever.
Malaysia: More Than Just a Holiday Destination
Malaysia is not just a vacation hotspot—it is also becoming an ideal destination for long-term stays and migration. A growing number of Chinese nationals are choosing Malaysia as their second home, seeking relief from China’s ‘996’ work culture—working 9 AM to 9 PM, six days a week. With a lower cost of living, comfortable environment, and a strong Chinese community, Malaysia is increasingly favored as a top relocation choice for a better quality of life.
Positive Economic Impact for Malaysia
This tourism boom is a major boost not just for hotels and travel operators but also for Malaysia’s economy as a whole. Increased spending in retail, transportation, food, and entertainment sectors is expected to further drive economic growth in the coming years.
