Nurses Livestream Newborns on TikTok, Raising Serious Privacy Concerns

A new unsettling trend has emerged in Malaysia, where nurses have been livestreaming newborn babies on TikTok, causing major concerns over privacy and ethical conduct.

Earlier this week, multiple posts on the Malaysian subreddit r/Malaysia shared screenshots of TikTok videos showing nurses placing their phones dangerously close to newborns’ faces, streaming live to large audiences. One screenshot displayed a nurse continuing to work in the background while the livestream was still running, sometimes for long periods.

The major concern is the potential harm this could cause to the infants, including eye strain from the prolonged screen exposure. There are also growing questions over privacy, parental consent, and whether the nurses’ focus on their social media broadcasts could be compromising the care they are meant to provide.

Some Reddit users pointed out that one of the TikTok accounts in question claimed to be working at a confinement center, which they argued could exempt them from certain healthcare regulations. However, this has prompted further questions about the role of the Ministry of Health (MOH) and whether confinement centers are also subject to privacy laws.

The situation worsened when one video showed a nurse kissing a newborn baby while wearing a mask—an action that many deemed unprofessional and inappropriate. Though the nurses were gentle, the main issue remains their disregard for privacy and ethical standards.

In the wake of these videos, the TikTok accounts of the nurses have since been deleted, but the ethical concerns persist. Many commenters believe that regardless of whether the nurses are in hospitals or confinement centers, livestreaming newborns without consent is a breach of privacy.
