“I’m the owner of the store.” Malaysian Aunty judged a man for being ‘just’ a cashier

If your work pays the bills and doesn’t hurt anybody, does it really matter what people think about certain jobs? A 26-year-old Malaysian man recently surprised an older woman who judged him without knowing the whole story.

In his popular social media post @QamarulQashroff, the young man shared his experience working as a cashier in a restaurant in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. Things took an unexpected turn when an older lady came up to him to pay her bill. She started asking him questions, making it feel like an interrogation, especially when she asked about his age.

“You’re 26 and still a cashier?”

What she didn’t know was that Qamarul had more to his story than just working the cash register.

“I’m actually the boss of this place.”

He was taken aback by the auntie’s assumption about his job, but he chose not to say anything at the time. Instead, he expressed his thoughts later in his social media post.

“Can’t a 26-year-old be a cashier? I guess the auntie thinks all men should be making big bucks every month.”

Qamarul also sarcastically thanked the woman, saying that because of customers like her, he could afford to travel and fulfill his childhood dream of seeing the world.

“Thanks to you, Aunty, I get to travel at my age. Living the dream.”

Qamarul, also known as Arul, said the aunty was speechless when she found out his real job title. He found the whole situation amusing. He also mentioned that he’s not new to the food and beverage industry.

“I’ve been in this business for a while because it’s a family thing.”

He explained that the family has been running the business for generations, and they currently have two outlets in Kuala Lumpur. The incident took place at their Cheras outlet, which has been open to the public for two months.

Even if Arul was just a cashier, it wouldn’t matter. People in the food and beverage industry know that business owners can make good money, especially when the business is doing well.

To others in similar situations, have you faced similar assumptions from customers?
