Jho Low Reportedly Seeks Trump Pardon Over 1MDB Charges

Jho Low Reportedly Applies For Presidential Pardon

Fugitive Malaysian businessman Jho Low has reportedly submitted an application seeking a presidential pardon from former United States president Donald Trump. According to information published on the website of the United States Department of Justice, the request filed under Jho Low’s name was classified as a “pardon after completion of sentence”. However, the application is reportedly still under consideration and no further details have been publicly disclosed so far. Sources familiar with the matter claimed the request was submitted in recent weeks.

Pardon Could Remove US Criminal Charges

If the pardon is granted, it could potentially remove the criminal charges currently faced by Jho Low in the United States. In 2018, American authorities charged him with allegedly misappropriating around USD4.5 billion linked to 1Malaysia Development Berhad, commonly known as 1MDB, in what was described as one of the world’s largest financial fraud scandals. Despite being charged, Jho Low has remained a fugitive and has yet to be apprehended by authorities. US federal prosecutors also alleged that Jho Low and two former bankers from Goldman Sachs paid almost USD2 billion in bribes to foreign officials to facilitate the scheme. Reports further claimed that another USD1 billion was distributed as kickbacks while Jho Low himself allegedly gained at least USD1.42 billion from the operation.

Trial Testimony Linked Jho Low To Trump Administration

The latest development has also reignited attention towards previous courtroom testimony involving former Goldman Sachs banker Tim Leissner. During the 2022 trial of former banker Roger Ng, Leissner claimed that Jho Low had allegedly assured him that Trump was directly involved in discussions aimed at ending the American criminal investigation into the 1MDB scandal. He further alleged that Jho Low had discussed the matter with Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and former senior White House adviser, in hopes of reaching a deal to avoid criminal prosecution. For context, Leissner himself reportedly applied for a presidential pardon last year, but the request was denied before he was ordered to begin serving a two-year prison sentence earlier this year.
