John Cena Taps Out in Final WWE Match as Legendary Career Comes to an End
John Cena Officially Retires After Final WWE Match

John Cena, the most decorated superstar in WWE history, has officially retired from professional wrestling following a dramatic and emotional loss in his final ever match.
The 17 time world champion concluded his year long retirement tour at Saturday Night’s Main Event, held in front of more than 19,000 fans at the Capital One Arena in Washington DC.
Final Match Ends in Tap Out Against Gunther

Cena’s farewell match ended in defeat against World Heavyweight Champion Gunther, who forced the wrestling legend to tap out after a series of punishing sleeper holds.
Despite multiple attempts to fight back using his iconic Five Knuckle Shuffle and Attitude Adjustment, Cena could not withstand Gunther’s relentless offense. After breaking free several times, Cena looked directly into the camera, smiled briefly, and tapped out.
It marked only the fourth tap out loss of his entire career and his first submission defeat since 2004, when he lost to Kurt Angle.
Emotional Farewell Inside the Ring

Following the match, Gunther exited the ring as the WWE locker room emptied out to honour Cena one final time.
Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk entered the ring and handed Cena their championship belts, allowing him to wear them for a final moment as a symbolic tribute to his legacy.
A video montage showcasing highlights from Cena’s storied career played on the big screen, featuring appearances from wrestlers across multiple eras, including archival footage of former WWE chairman Vince McMahon.
Crowd Reacts With Anger and Emotion
While fans celebrated Cena’s legacy, many were visibly upset with the booking of his final match.
Paul Triple H Levesque, WWE’s chief content officer, was loudly booed when he appeared, with chants expressing frustration echoing throughout the arena as the pro Cena crowd vented their disappointment.
Cena Leaves His Gear in the Ring
In a powerful symbolic gesture, Cena removed his shoes and sweatbands, placing them in the center of the ring before taking a final bow.
As he walked up the ramp, he stopped one last time, looked into the camera, and delivered his farewell message.
“It’s been a pleasure serving you all these years. Thank you,” Cena said, before exiting as the broadcast faded to black.
A Historic Career Comes Full Circle
Cena’s retirement caps off a remarkable and unpredictable 2025. Earlier in the year, he shocked fans by turning heel for the first time in his career at Elimination Chamber.
He went on to defeat Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania to become the most decorated world champion in WWE history, before losing the title back to Rhodes at SummerSlam. His final championship reign came after defeating Dominik Mysterio in his hometown of Boston.
Gunther’s victory also marked the second time in 2025 that he ended a legend’s career, having previously defeated Bill Goldberg in his retirement match.
