Malaysians Want Macklemore to Perform in KL After Releasing Pro-Palestine Song

Malaysians are calling for American rapper Macklemore to perform in Kuala Lumpur after he released a pro-Palestine song earlier this month.

In the song, Macklemore criticizes the U.S. for funding Israel’s attacks on Palestine since October last year.

This movement was sparked by FLY FM through an Instagram post on Monday, May 20, 2024.

“We need your help to bring Macklemore to KL! In the spirit of advocating for a ceasefire in Palestine, let’s unite and empower Macklemore’s Hind’s Hall live in Malaysia,” the post read.

Macklemore released the song “Hind’s Hall” on May 7, 2024

The song’s title refers to Hamilton Hall, an academic building at Columbia University occupied by protesting students in late April. University authorities had threatened to evict them unless they stopped their pro-Palestine protest.

The hall was later renamed Hind’s Hall in honor of a six-year-old Palestinian girl named Hind Rajab. She was reportedly killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking help from the Red Crescent Society for about three hours on January 29, 2024.

Two paramedics sent to rescue Hind were also killed. The Israeli government denied involvement in the deaths of Hind, her five siblings, and the two paramedics in Tel al-Hawa, Gaza.

Hind’s story went global after a phone recording of her final moments with her family went viral on social media.

In his lyrics, Macklemore condemns the U.S. role in the war, questions the semantics used by the U.S. to define genocide, and demands freedom for Palestine

Macklemore expresses his feelings openly, just like in many of his previous songs.

“The blood is on your hands Biden, we can see it all. And f**k no, I’m not voting for you in the fall.

“Never be defeated when freedom’s on the horizon. Yet the music industry’s quiet, complicit in their platform of silence,” he raps.

He also questions his fellow musicians for staying silent about the atrocities committed against Palestinians.
