MAHB Cyberattack Exposes Malaysia’s Weak Cybersecurity, Experts Warn Critical Infrastructure at Risk

The recent ransomware attack targeting Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) has triggered alarm among cybersecurity experts, highlighting vulnerabilities in the nation’s critical infrastructure and revealing a troubling lack of preparedness against sophisticated cyber threats. Despite MAHB successfully containing the cyberattack—which involved hackers demanding a ransom of USD10 million (approximately RM44.39 million)—the incident severely disrupted operations at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), affecting flight schedules, baggage handling, and check-in systems for over ten hours.

Associate Professor Dr Muhamad Khairulnizam Zaini of Universiti Teknologi MARA described the incident as a critical wake-up call, underscoring the urgent need for strengthened cybersecurity measures nationwide. He explained that critical infrastructure, especially airports heavily reliant on digital technology, remains particularly vulnerable to cyberattacks, posing serious risks of operational disruptions, financial losses, and damaged reputation. Khairulnizam urged immediate investment in advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence and real-time threat detection systems, as well as enhanced training programs to reduce human-related cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

Supporting this stance, Dr Norulbaiti Mohd Nor from the University College of Aviation Malaysia emphasised the importance of continuously upgrading cybersecurity governance protocols and implementing secure technological infrastructures, such as blockchain. She warned that frequent cyber incidents could severely undermine public trust in aviation security, comparing cyber threats to pandemics due to their invisible yet devastating impact. Meanwhile, CAAM’s CEO Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud assured the public that they are working closely with MAHB to ensure robust system architecture and prevent future attacks. Despite these assurances, the attack has exposed critical weaknesses, prompting calls for immediate regulatory enhancements in cybersecurity and data protection across Malaysia’s aviation sector.
