Formula 1 Returns To Sepang
Formula 1 and the FIA have officially confirmed that Malaysia will host the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit from October 2 to 4, 2026. The race will take place between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix on the 2026 calendar. The event remains subject to final agreements and official approval, including sign-off from the World Motor Sport Council, and will be staged as the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. Formula 1 said the agreement between Formula 1, the FIA, the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia will ensure the Grand Prix goes ahead, while the rest of the 2026 calendar remains unchanged.
Sepang Makes Its Formula 1 Return
Sepang first joined the Formula 1 calendar in 1999 and has long been regarded as one of the sport’s most iconic and demanding circuits, known for its passionate fans, exciting racing and unpredictable weather. Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali welcomed the announcement, describing Malaysia as an incredible country and Sepang as a venue that holds a special place in Formula 1 history. He also thanked His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim of Malaysia, the FIA and both governments for making the agreement possible. Information on ticket sales for the race will be announced at a later date.
Leaders Welcome Historic Collaboration
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said the agreement reflects the close cooperation between Formula One Management, the FIA, Bahrain and Malaysia, while reaffirming Malaysia’s longstanding place in Formula 1 history. He added that the safety and wellbeing of teams, officials, volunteers and fans remained the highest priority throughout the process. Bahrain Crown Prince and Prime Minister His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa said the race demonstrates Bahrain’s continued commitment to Formula 1 despite ongoing regional challenges. Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described the collaboration as a reflection of the strong friendship and mutual trust between Malaysia and Bahrain, adding that Malaysia is ready to welcome Formula 1, the FIA, teams and fans back to Sepang while showcasing the country’s world-class infrastructure, operational excellence and hospitality.
