Malaysian Woman Sails 5,900 Nautical Miles Home With Husband And Boat Cat
A Different Way To Return Home
Most Malaysians would simply book a flight home. However, Malaysian writer Hadhinah has chosen a completely different route by sailing 5,900 nautical miles from Australia back to Malaysia with her American husband, Austin, and their beloved cat, Gary. Better known online as @hahahadhinah, Hadhinah began the ambitious voyage aboard SV Malua, a 26-foot Folkboat purchased in Australia in 2025. The journey is expected to take between three and four months as they sail along Australia’s east coast before crossing into Indonesia and eventually arriving in Malaysia.
Years Of Planning Became Reality
Originally from Sandakan, Sabah, Hadhinah moved to the United States in 2014, where she travelled across all 50 states before deciding to pursue a simpler life at sea with Austin. The couple deliberately chose a small 1981 Australian-built Folkboat instead of a larger yacht because they believed it would be easier to handle, maintain and repair throughout the long voyage. Before departing, they spent months living around Pittwater, Australia, preparing the boat through maintenance work, equipment upgrades and repeated sailing tests to ensure everything was ready for the international journey home.
Gary Becomes The Star Of The Journey
Besides Hadhinah and Austin, their cat Gary has become one of the biggest highlights of the adventure. Originally adopted after needing a new home, Gary quickly adapted to life aboard the sailboat by exploring every corner of Malua before settling into his favourite sleeping spots. The couple frequently shares updates showing Gary inspecting the boat and relaxing on deck, earning him the playful title of the boat’s “real captain”. As they continue sailing towards Malaysia through Indonesia, thousands of followers are keeping up with the remarkable journey and cheering the trio on as they make their way home.
