Malaysian Woman Quits Her Job And Takes A Train To America Without Flying
She Quit Her Job And Decided To Go To America The Long Way
Most of us would probably just book a flight if we wanted to get from Kuala Lumpur to the United States. But Malaysian content creator Siao Sparrow has decided to make the journey a little more interesting. She left KL Sentral on Sunday, 9 August, with a plan to travel all the way to America without taking a single flight.
Her first destination? Hat Yai, Thailand. Siao boarded the overnight train from Kuala Lumpur before stopping at Padang Besar, where passengers had to get off with their luggage to clear immigration and customs at the Malaysia-Thailand border. She then continued towards Hat Yai, completing the first part of what is going to be a very, very long journey.
America Is Still A Very Long Way Away
And when we say long, we mean it. From Thailand, Siao plans to continue through Laos and China before heading across Xinjiang, Central Asia, Turkey and Europe. Once she reaches Europe, the plan is to cross the Atlantic Ocean by cruise ship before eventually arriving in Florida.
There’s no fixed date for when she’ll actually reach the United States, either. She’s basically travelling one country at a time and seeing where the journey takes her.
Even getting started required some careful timing. The recently relaunched direct KL-Hat Yai train only operates once a month. Siao also missed out on getting a sleeper berth and had to settle for a regular seat instead.
But things worked out pretty nicely. By morning, another passenger offered her an empty bunk. Plot twist: the stranger already followed Siao on Xiaohongshu.
She Admitted She Wasn’t Completely Ready
Despite setting off on such a huge adventure, Siao admitted that she was nervous and didn’t exactly feel fully prepared when she left Kuala Lumpur.
But she went anyway.
Now that Hat Yai is done, there are still multiple countries, countless train journeys and an entire ocean standing between her and America. There’s no exact arrival date and plenty could change along the way, but that’s probably what makes this journey interesting in the first place.
One thing’s for sure, this definitely isn’t your usual KL-to-America itinerary.
