A Netizen Belittles Malay Language and Questions Mek Yun’s Identity

A social media comment recently sparked attention when a netizen mocked Malaysian influencer Mek Yun for not speaking Mandarin. The individual went as far as claiming that the Malay language is useless, while insisting that a Chinese Malaysian must be fluent in Mandarin to be respected.

The Offensive Comment That Triggered Backlash

@mekyunnnn

Korang setuju tak dengan apa yang Mekyun cakap? Haih… STOP lah dengan mentaliti macam ni sebab mentaliti macam ni lah yang sebenarnya wujudkan jurang antara kita, sedangkan Bahasa Melayu sepatutnya menyatukan kita semua.

The commenter, using the name Ah Boy Lee88, accused Mek Yun of forgetting her roots and questioned why she would create content in Malay. He wrote that Malay was pointless, suggesting that only English and Mandarin were essential for survival. He even claimed her ancestors would be embarrassed by her language choices.

Mek Yun Hits Back: “I Am Hokkien. Malay Unites All Malaysians.”

After seeing her family brought into the insult, Mek Yun responded decisively. She clarified that her mother tongue is Hokkien, not Mandarin. Throughout her upbringing, from kindergarten to university, her daily communication had always been in Malay and English. Because of that, she never developed fluency in Mandarin but still identifies fully as Chinese.

She added that her ancestors would be proud to see their descendants living harmoniously with all races while mastering the national language that unites Malaysians.

Calling Out Narrow Mindsets That Divide Communities

Mek Yun highlighted that the real issue is not about Chinese Malaysians speaking Mandarin. It is about people born and raised in Malaysia who still refuse or fail to understand the national language. She emphasised that respect, empathy and unity matter far more than proving which language is superior.

Netizens Support Mek Yun’s Stance

Many Malaysians applauded her reply and condemned the rude comment. They pointed out the irony that the netizen who criticised her wrote in broken Malay while attempting to belittle others. The general sentiment was clear, that Bahasa Malaysia is a language of unity and should never be dismissed.
