AirAsia Updates Uniform Policy to Allow Hijab for All Female Crew

AirAsia Takes a Progressive Step Towards Workplace Inclusivity

AirAsia has officially unveiled an inclusive uniform update that allows all female cabin crew members to wear the hijab while on duty. This marks a major shift in the airline’s approach toward employee empowerment and cultural representation.

Previously, the hijab was only worn on specific routes such as Jeddah due to local regulations. With the new policy, the option is now extended across the full AirAsia network, giving crew members the freedom to dress in a way that aligns with their personal beliefs.

A Decision Driven by Employee Voice and Public Feedback

 

In a statement, AirAsia revealed that the move was shaped by both internal discussions and public sentiment. The airline emphasised the importance of creating a workplace where every Allstar feels confident and proud.

Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia Aviation Group, said the uniform update is part of the airline’s evolution as a global brand with a diverse workforce.

He stated that AirAsia uniforms have always prioritised professionalism, safety and comfort. This new policy strengthens those values by acknowledging the personal identity and cultural expression of its employees.

Reflecting AirAsia’s Diversity Across Borders

Suhaila Hassan, Group Head of Cabin Crew, highlighted that the update reflects the multicultural nature of the AirAsia workforce. Crew members come from a wide variety of backgrounds, yet share the same mission of delivering world class service.

She confirmed that the design and rollout process is underway, with targeted implementation by Ramadan 2026.

The updated uniform will retain AirAsia’s signature red look but now includes professionally designed hijab and trouser options, similar to those previously used on Jeddah flights.

Tony Fernandes: Listening Is Part of the Culture

Capital A CEO Tony Fernandes explained that AirAsia’s strength has always come from listening to its people. When the cabin crew voiced their desire for a more inclusive uniform choice, management recognised the importance of respecting different beliefs.

He noted that diversity and expression have always been key elements behind AirAsia’s identity and continued success as a global airline.
